Hydration: Your Daily fluid Intake

Your body is 70-75% water.  It's stored in your cells giving them their shape and form in muscles.  It flows through your body within your blood vessels.  Water provides structure to some of your body parts, protects tissues such as your spinal cord and brain, lubricates your joints and assists in the function of digestion through salivation and stomach secretions.  Water is necesssary for the elimination of wastes through urination and sweat.  It even helps with your vision and hearing senses!!

With water being such a part of our bodies, its no wonder its the top priority essential nutrient of all.

A typical person should consume half their body weight in ounces per day in fluids.  That may seem like a lot.

How can you get it all in??

Begin your day with a glass of water.  I typically drink one 16 ounce glass upon waking.

For breakfast consume liquids.  Juice, milk, soymilk, liquid in hot cereals, juice in fruits such as melons and a moderate cup of tea or coffee also contribute.

Choose herbal teas or other caffeine free beverages  in addition to water to provide non caloric fluids throughout the day.

Carry water with you at all times.  I constantly have a 1.5 liter bottle at the gym or on my desk.

If water bores you add fresh sqeezed lemon or lime juice for a small amount of flavor.

Consume foods that also provide some fluids such as fruits, vegetables and yogurt.
